The Korea Environmental Microorganisms Bank (KEMB) was established with the support of the Ministry of Science and ICT/Korea Research Foundation.

In the microbial industry, strains are essential, and the need to develop applied technologies for using useful biological resources and establish resource centers is recognized worldwide.

Developments in industrialization are rapidly destroying our ecosystem and reducing biodiversity. In an international effort to cope with this, the Convention on Biological Diversity was signed in June 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment & Development (UNCED) / Earth Summit.

In recent years, due to rapid industrialization and urbanization, the natural environment and living environment are deteriorating to the point where they can no longer be neglected. If there is no proper further action, it is evident that the environment will only be polluted and lead to the destruction that cannot be recoverable.

To restore such ecosystem destruction, developing the most economical and efficient biological processing methods and systematic microbial resources is urgently needed, and awareness of the global role of microbial conservation organizations is being raised.

KEMB was established to preserve the native environmental microorganisms and genetic resources. It provides basic data for classifying native microorganisms and ecosystems in Korea by securing native environmental microorganisms and genetic resources in Korea and establishing an efficient management system for storage and distribution. In addition, we will build infrastructure for establishing international-level resource centers and use them as basic materials for bio-processing research for environmental pollution removal and ecosystem restoration.

By providing basic resources for the development of BT/ET industrial technology that will lead the global economy in the 21st century, we will contribute to revitalizing environmentally friendly and efficient system businesses to restore ecosystems destroyed by urbanization and industrialization
